If you haven’t fallen in love with Lily Therens and her incredible work yet, then you probably haven’t had a chance to meet her. She is as delightful as her illustrations. We’ve been fangirls of Lily’s for a while, so when we needed a playful piece of art that celebrated all things TBD we knew just who to go to. She graciously accepted our challenge of illustrating a map of our area and we handed her creative freedom to give us her talented take. And, she nailed it. With the help of Jeremy Stanger she painted The Bridge District community with an artistic twist! Lily’s new mural is on display in The Foundry’s front lobby. If you look closely you might even find some inside jokes woven into the artwork – hint: look for the gentleman in the bowtie – the Mayor himself is in the piece, along with many other hidden treasures.
We asked Lily what her favorite part of the new mural was, she replied ‘All the easter eggs!’
“I had a lot of fun sneaking little inside jokes into the artwork because I love the idea of people taking the time to examine it closer! There is so much to see in the mural that I think people can find something new with each viewing. I made sure the mural was filled with references to The Bridge District and West Sacramento, so that people feel they’re on the inside when they catch the references!”
As we are introducing The Bridge District to our Sacramento neighbors we love learning what they love best about our side of the river from a food and experience standpoint. Lily said that her favorite place to eat dinner in West Sacramento is Sutter Health Park, “it’s hard to beat a classic ballpark hotdog!” However, after a baseball game she says that she will often find herself enjoying some delicious handcrafted ice cream from Devil May Care.
The mural took about three months to complete due to all the intricate details which meant that Lily Therens and her well known painting assistant, Jeremy Stanger were able to spend a lot of time in our neighborhood. The Foundry is located right across the street from Drake’s The Barn and Lily said that was a big perk of this project. After all, what’s more satisfying than a beer break? “It’s also nice to get outside and away from midtown where things tend to be a little more fast-paced.”
Lily and her team are now honorary members of our community and regulars at Drake’s. We are ecstatic to have an original Lily Therens piece in our neighborhood and hope that you come visit The Bridge District soon!
